In rainy climates, the season — not the plant — sets the pace of a road program. Rain stops paving, soaks stockpiles and reduces plant output at the same time. Contractors who plan the season get far more tons placed than those who plan only the plant.
How rain affects each part of the operation
| Part | Effect of rain | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Paving | Not allowed on wet surfaces or in rain under most specifications | Pave in dry windows; plan by workable days |
| Stockpiles | Moisture rises, especially in fines | Roofs over fines; drainage; dry stock built in advance |
| Plant output | Wet aggregate reduces drying capacity | Burner and drum sized for wet moisture |
| Trucks and site | Mud, slower haul | Hard site roads; truck washing |
| Crew | Idle time | Maintenance and training on rain days |
Step 1 — Count workable days
Use local rainfall records — or past project diaries — to estimate workable paving days per month. Plan the tonnage against those, not calendar days.
| Month | Calendar days | Expected workable days | Planned tons |

Step 2 — Front-load the dry months
Place the most tonnage when the weather allows. Use the capacity calculator with workable days to size the plant, then add headroom for wet-aggregate output loss — see rated vs real output.
Step 3 — Build dry stock before the rains
Aggregate under cover is the most valuable stock in the wet months. Build it up during the last dry weeks — see stockpile management.
Step 4 — Use storage to bridge showers
A hot mix silo lets the plant keep producing while paving pauses for a short shower, and lets trucks load quickly when it stops — see do you need a silo.
Step 5 — Make rain days useful
| Rain-day task | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Planned maintenance | Fewer breakdowns in dry windows |
| Calibration | Better mix when production resumes |
| Stockpile reshaping and drainage | Drier aggregate |
| Training | Stronger crew |
